keyboard_help_key_800_clr_8838Thanks for you concern.  The answer is, “No.”

On the other hand, I FELT lost, when my computers constantly lost connectivity, and I was unable to accomplish all my work, such as posting my blog, etc.  I have had to change Internet Service Providers.  ‘Bye, bye, Comcast.  That’s all I will say here.

Here are the things I’ve been doing while you wondered, “Did Nancy Get Lost?”

Last Will & Testament – Those Pesky Procrastination Provokers

SUNFLOWER SMILEY FACEAs a Change Your Life (personal coach) I recently taught a series of classes on “Self-Care.” While we usually think of that in terms of diet, exercise, and manicures, I decided to include a segment on areas most people choose to ignore until it is too late to have their wishes followed. Anyone can get into a car accident. Everyone is subject to the strange and destructive weather forces we are experiencing. Life happens. Be prepared for the unexpected.

One of my dearest young friends (and former employee) celebrated New Year’s Eve with a bit of alcohol. That drink quickly became a fatal mix with prescription medications she was taking. It was a dramatic and tragic end. Fortunately, she had taken out insurance polices for her newborn twins and their older brother, which has helped the grandmother in assuming the burden of taking on these infants and grandson late in life. It also ensured their future education. Young or old – whether it is about finances,  your computer files, your will, or whether you want a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate order) – here are some things to think about.

"smelling Like A Rose" happy faceI also can share an NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) exercise to help you get over the procrastination which usually prevents our taking action. (You’ll come out “smelling like a rose” and will feel SO GOOD when you have accomplished these things!)  Continue reading

Choosing Your Voice for a Writing Project

Things to Consider in Choosing Your Voice for a Writing Project

Definition of Voice

business coffee mugThe term “voice” is used to describe the style, tone, and format used in writing projects like literature, a presentation, or a theatrical production. There are many styles, and they can be combined. See what suits your purposes. Voice infuses personality into your work. By choosing your voice carefully, you can use it as a technique to provide continuity among seemingly unrelated events. You can use it to advance the scene from one situation to the next in a timeline. You also may employ it to provide the audience with a perspective which is different from what the characters “are seeing” while involved in the events you depict. Continue reading

Unfinished Works of Art

Dr. C. DeLores Tucker

Unfinished Works of Art – an Ode to Black Women

In 1995, I wrote Unfinished Works of Art and dedicated it to Dr. C. DeLores Tucker, who, along with the Honorable Shirley Chisholm and others, founded the National Congress of Black Women at the urging of Rev. Jesse Jackson.   Dr. Tucker used to call me “The Blue Eyed Soul Sister.”  I met her when a group of us founded the Prince William County, Virginia chapter. (Of course, I was the only member of the Caucasian persuasion.)  Dr.  Tucker was the first African-American female Secretary of State in Pennsylvania and so much more, as you will learn if you click on the link below the next photo.  She cared deeply about the education of children and about the political processes which occur in formulating governmental policy.  She was a strong, regal, elegant woman, who always wore a turban that matched her many-hued suits.  See her beauty here.  I miss her. I think I sent her a copy of my poem; but, it all happened some years ago, and I cannot remember.

What inspired me to write this poem, aside from my long history of involvement in civil rights causes, was my looking around at a room full of beautiful Black women, of all shapes, sizes, and colors. Everyone was dressed in the traditional black suit, with a purple, gold, and black Kente cloth across one shoulder. (Kente cloth originated from the Ashanti people in South Ghana. Below are samples.)

Now, here is my poem describing the elegant, intelligent, socially-aware and active Black women with whom I kept company that day and for a long time thereafter. That is one group of women whose company I love, because they are conversant about almost every topic of importance, they are actively loving,  and they are supportive of educational and social service to the whole community. I am so blessed to have spent time with them.

Dedicated to Dr. C. DeLores Tucker  For Showing Us The Way

They say that Martin had a dream

But, he is not the Only One

Who awakened from a sound sleep

In the midnight hour of

America’s Apartheid

Creator God, Behold Your Daughters!

A multi-hued array

of African-American art.

Each one

Wearing the stamp of individuality

In feature, as well as in mind,

Rather than coming from some classic,

Uninterrupted mold

Which can be had at Tiffany’s

Or Woolworth’s.

The same hip

That balances a baby

With an old wood stirrin’ spoon

Can balance

A briefcase and a laptop computer.

The same lips

That shout, “Come here, boy!”

Can form the words,

“Mr. President, I object.

Here is what we’re going to do.”

People, don’tcha’ know

That – to this very day –

Whenever a manchild is born

The Old folks’ intently piercing eyes

Ask the question once  again,

“Are You The One?”

But, I ask each of you

Women sprung from the womb

of Mother Africa

Molded by the Master Hand of God Who Loves You

Beautiful Works of Art ……….  In Progress

I ask YOU

Are You The One?

Love and Tolerance

Finding Balance – Love and Tolerance

Stones balanced in a curveLove and Tolerance have been MIA (missing in action) during this political season – not just in the United States of  America, but across the globe. It can be difficult to find and/or keep one’s emotional, spiritual, and even physical balance when immersed in the news of political or social upheaval and in images of the victims of wars and acts of terrorism.  Doctors report a big increase in patient visits for stress-related symptoms during and after the Presidential election. So, what can be done about it? Continue reading

Homelessness True Stories

This script is an excerpt from my playbook of true stories about homelessness. It is called ” 3 Hots & A Cot,” and the monologues were performed by the people who were homeless and living at a 1,400 person shelter in Washington, D.C.  Learn More Here

How many of you have ever read Reader’s Digest – that section where people write about their “most unforgettable character?” I should write one of those articles, ‘cuz I met some truly unforgettable characters while living in the shelter!

clown and dog made from a balloonLike “Blossom,” for example. Blossom is a man. But not an ordinary man. He’s a clown! A real clown, who dresses up each day in a Scottish kilt, wearing silly bloomers underneath. He paints his white face even whiter and adds big red lips outlined in black. Then he sticks a red ball on his nose, puts on an orange wig, and does magic tricks and pantomime. He makes toy poodles and hearts by twisting balloons into shapes. I never can figure out why the balloons don’t pop when he does that! He performed at the White House and for children’s parties all over the city. But, clown work is seasonal! Who would have thought that? (pause) He sure does when he runs out of money each year! Yes, Blossom is unforgettable. Continue reading

LinkedIn – What Is It and Why Use It?

Basic Computer Use - fingers on keyboard onLInkedIn site

Creating a LinkedIn Presence

This post about LinkedIn is one of the most boring posts I’ll ever create. Why? It is because I’m simply providing the Table of Contents to the manual you will receive from me when you take my class about How To Create an Effective LinkedIn Presence. But, first…

What Is LinkedIn and Why Should You Use It?

  • Personal or business. Anyone with an email address can create a LinkedIn Page within minutes. It’s free and easy. You do not need a Premium upgrade to succeed.
  • LinkedIn has 200 million members. It’s the leading social networking site for professionals, so business-to-business companies should create a Company Page. Although Facebook may be more commonly used (at the time of this writing) for Business-to-Consumer interactions, that is changing.
  • Unlike other social media tools, LinkedIn is to be used BY PROFESSIONALS – FOR PROFESSIONAL REASONS. All content should be free of political or religious slants, unless that is your business. All content should be free of racism (and other “isms”), profanity, lewd language or images, etc.
  • LinkedIn is an essential tool for job-seekers, because recruiters are using it to determine whether to read your resume; and it is becoming a vehicle of choice for business professionals. If you do not have a well-executed LinkedIn Page, many people (especially Recruiters) will discredit or discount you and choose someone else with whom to work.
  • LinkedIn is the primary social media platform used by professionals and business people to connect to others. Users have a personal, profile, which enables them to document their professional information, skills, knowledge, and experience.
  • Additionally, many of the people on LinkedIn also want to promote their business, so LinkedIn has the facility to produce Company pages. Company pages also have the facility to promote pages and posts and to analyze the reach of the page.
  • I can teach you all the basics and give you a manual, so you don’t have to remember everything I said in class.

Creating Persuasive Elevator Speeches

Elevator speech class: coffee, paper and pencil; keyboard

Creating Elevator Speeches

I hope some of you will take my Creating Persuasive Elevator Speeches class.   This class is not just the normal instruction about “elevator speeches.” That takes only 5 minutes to describe. Creating Persuasive Elevator Speeches is a more in-depth guide on what to do and how to customize that kind of introduction for other occasions, such as when you are seated next to a stranger at a dinner party, or when you are riding the Metro/subway. You would use “elevator speeches” or “pitches” when you are trying to explain a business, a project, a fundraiser, or some other cause for which you hope to generate interest when you are talking to a stranger in a very limited amount of time. Here are some details. Continue reading

Your Life Story

Would You Like To Tell Your Life Story?

You Can Tell Your Life Story In So Many Ways!Senior Woman Remembers Her Life Story

  • A memoir for your grandchildren – or in case you get famous.
  • A Facebook or website “About” page
  • An introduction to a speech
  • A part of an article you are writing for publication
  • A part of your self-awareness as you look inward for higher understanding

In other words, there are a thousand formal and informal ways of expressing who you are to a variety of audiences; but, not all everyone loves to write.

I am semi-famous (and won a bunch of awards) for the scripts I have written. They tell uplifting and compelling stories about people who have overcome extreme hardships (some of which involved addiction, AIDS, homelessness, sexual and physical abuse, and severe diseases). What the scripts and the people have in common is the fact that – no matter how they are labeled – they reveal the great courage, depth, and beauty of spirit in each person. We can do that for you, even if your life has not been so melodramatic!

Either I can teach you how to do this in a class, or you can retain my services for a formal project. If you choose the latter, check out the video below to understand the steps involved. Continue reading
