Serenity Prayer as Affirmations

Serenity ~

Serenity can be elusive. It’s something most of us seek amidst all the chaos, disruption, danger, and negativity being experienced throughout the world. To regain balance when under stress, EVERYONE can do one thing quickly, easily, and either aloud or without anyone else’s knowledge. It is using a version of the famous “Serenity Prayer.” I say, “a version,” because…

bronze praying hands by Alexas Fotos used for Serenity Prayer…There are prayers, and there are affirmations, but even the famous “Serenity Prayer” is not a combination of both. Nor should a person change everything that CAN be changed. So – I decided to fix that.

In the form of an affirmation, the language should be even more powerful as a message to the subconscious mind, better-enabling people to manifest serenity as a state of being.

I’ll provide you free access to my version in a hot minute! You don’t have to subscribe to my blogs here to get it; but, if you choose to, I’ll greatly appreciate you! Healthy Chakras Help

I teach a lot of classes on everything from business and the basics of computer use for beginners to technical training, holistic healing, and metaphysics.  Recently, I’ve been updating a series of classes in my course about the chakra systems that exist within the bodies of all living beings.

students sit in a circle and raise hands when they can answer questions about how the serenity prayer has helped themThe goal is to teach people about things – from food choices and the use of stones, to spiritual practices, including yoga and other exercises – that are specific to each chakra.

In that process, I remembered that 12-Step programs use the now-famous Serenity Prayer as an integral part of their programs for overcoming addictions and achieving tranquility. There are a few different versions of both the prayer and the understanding of who originated it, but here is what we think we know.

The Original Serenity Prayer

The original Serenity Prayer was written by American theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr. His words seem to have been:

bronze hands in serenity prayer position by Alexas FotosFather, give us courage to change what must be altered, serenity to accept what cannot be helped, and the insight to know the one from the other. (https://yalealumnimagazine.com/articles/2709-you-can-quote-them)

The prayer was adopted and popularized by Alcoholics Anonymous and other twelve-step programs. Note the difference between the original and the language most used in current society, which is:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things that I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

Niebuhr’s prayer originally asked for courage first. Only afterward, does he importune – with specificity – to change things that must be changed, not things that simply can be changed. Again,

Father, give us courage to change what must be altered, serenity to accept what cannot be helped, and the insight to know the one from the other.

Why Did I Feel the Need to Change a Perfectly Good Serenity Prayer that is Famous and Accepted by Most People?

I did it because the commonly-used language is one of aspiration – to acquire something one does not have and for which there are mere hopes. It is asking a source – typically viewed as being Outside of Oneself – for things that people usually fear and suspect they cannot achieve…things like courage, serenity, and wisdom. It is future-oriented, but we need serenity NOW!

At the very least, people are praying for qualities they believe they do not possess, or they would not ask to receive them. In fact, those capabilities exist in all of us and simply need our intention and attention to manifest themselves. When we nurture them as much as we nurture our fears and angst, we can overcome the shadows by tapping into the Soul’s innate light.

I Cheated – a Teensy Bit

Just for the purpose of the short video, I did leave the first line in when I altered the wording. I want people, who are accustomed to popular usage, to recognize it instantly, feel at home, tune in, and find contentment. It is the following lines that count in talking to your subconscious.

No worries. It’s SHORT, but you can loop the video if you want it to continue repeating.

OR

I am serene.

I accept the things I cannot change.

I change the things I can and should.

I am wise. I know the difference.

“The Proof Is in the Pudding.”

You don’t have to believe me. You could try it. Spend a week or so, saying the traditional version. Then, spend the equivalent time using my wording, and see if you can determine a positive difference.

I hope you like it. The music is by beloved  Llewellyn.  I use it with licensure. He makes beautiful music for Reiki healing and general de-stressing. Please do not share this video, because you do not have that music license. Only I do. You may share the link to my copy, however.
