What IS Vimeo and Who Uses It?
Both YouTube and Vimeo are free-to-use video sharing networks, but Vimeo also offers four more membership options: Plus, PRO, Business, and Premium. Each level provides different levels of storage and support. Viewers may comment on the content and follow those who post videos on these two platforms. Of course, you could choose to use both networks for all your content, but you might want to be selective about which videos you post when using either option. Why?
Vimeo Versus YouTube Storage and Upload Maximums
- Vimeo gives you up to 7TB of storage. That is huge ~ equal to about 600 full-length movies!
- It provides 500MB of free storage every week and features SD and 720p HD playback for free and pro users alike.
- However, even the most expensive Vimeo Pro account limits you to a maximum of 50 GB of uploads per year.
- In addition, each video upload is limited to a maximum of 5 GB.
- On the other hand, a YouTube account grants unlimited video uploads, up to 2 GB per video.
Uploading videos to Vimeo is just as easy as it is with YouTube. You can get even better quality when you upgrade to a paid Vimeo Pro account which requires much less bandwidth for viewing. Are You an Artist, Musician, or Filmmaker?
Here is another basic consideration. According to Elise Moreau on LifeWire,
“Vimeo is largely characterized by its content that is created and uploaded by artists, musicians and indie filmmakers who would like to share their creative work. Although the variety of video content is slightly more limited compared to the wide range available on YouTube, the popular video-sharing site has over 16,000 videos uploaded daily.
Content and Viewers Versus THOSE ADS!
I don’t wanna see any more ads ever again in life!
Google-owned YouTube still dominates the market as a video hosting platform with over 3 billion views per day. Over 48 hours of user-generated video content is uploaded every minute! That content ranges from professional business presentations to movies, to personal video blogs. However, some of us hate using it because of the proliferation of ads, which you have to pay to block.
Of Vimeo’s 170 million viewers, about 42 million are in the United States. Guess what! NO ADS!

More Pros for YouTube
HUGE Audience
- YouTube ranks #1.
- This could mean your video ranks higher in Google search results.
- Thus, it might have a better chance of being discovered.
Channel Customization
You can customize your YouTube channel’s appearance by selecting a background image and colors for your channel box, changing the font style, choosing a layout and organizing your videos into playlists.
Earn Money on YouTube
If your videos get enough views or subscribers, YouTube may be willing to enter into a revenue-sharing partnership. In that case, you will find ads on the sidebar and at the bottom of your videos. You will earn money based on how much traffic your video attracts.
More Cons for YouTube
“Lost In The Shuffle”
Your videos are a tiny portion among thousands of others. Even if it is outstanding, your intended audience may never discover it. It’s like they are walking blindfolded through an unfamiliar room full of furniture and other obstacles.
Flagging
One of my videos was “flagged” with the comment that I had violated copyright laws by posting something which I did not have a license to use. The fact is, not only had I purchased the license, but I also had personal conversations with the creator’s company about my using that composition as the background music for a guided HypnoMeditation that I created.
However, it turned out that, since the owner/creator of that music had copyrighted the material originally and was posting it on YouTube, I never can post my use of his music on that channel. That was a big “bummer,” since YouTube was the place most likely for my target audience to look for this kind of HypnoMeditation.
YouTube relies on its community to report and flag videos for copyrighted content, pornography, violence or any other inappropriate subject matter. In my case, an auto-warning came up, and I could contest the finding. (I still lost the argument.) However, be aware that YouTube can remove your content without any notice at all.
Profane Comments
As your videos grow more popular and attract more viewers, you increase the chance of receiving inappropriate comments, profanity, and spam. Bad comments can potentially lead to a bad reputation. For this reason, some users prefer to disable comments on their videos. Vimeo users are more likely to be from the art and entertainment industries, and they may have more constructive input to offer about video productions than the completely random YouTube commenters.
More Pros for Vimeo
Using Your Logo and Branding
One thing YouTube doesn’t have that Vimeo does have is the ability to embed your own logo or image into the video player. However, the YouTube logo is always in the lower right corner of its video player, and it prevents your putting your logo or other branding symbols there.
Analytics
The analytics platform on a Vimeo Pro account is quite sophisticated compared to the more basic analytics system used by YouTube, according to some experts.
Audience Engagement
As mentioned above, Vimeo typically has more content created by performing artists and producers. The users tend to participate more actively, and the audience engagement is from a more knowledgeable and friendly population, which may engender more subscribers to your posts.
More Cons for Vimeo
Gotta Pay For The Best Features
Although the Vimeo Pro features are outstanding, a Pro account has a fee. Not everyone will find it worthwhile to pay for premium features, and if you decide against it, you’ll miss out on a lot of what Vimeo has to offer.
Gotta Pay If You Want To Promote A Product Or Service
If you promote a product or service through a video on Vimeo, you are required to pay for a Pro account, and, if you upload a commercial video on a free account, you risk having your video taken down.

Disclaimer
I’m not an expert in this subject matter. Not only are the features I’ve mentioned a “shortlist,” rather than a full description, but networks also change their protocols, algorithms, and features often. So, I’m just piquing your interest so you can learn more from the pros if you want to. Hope it was helpful.
