Elevator Speeches: Short, Long, Flexible, & Persuasive

Elevator speech class: coffee, paper and pencil; keyboard

Elevator Speeches: I hope some of you will take my class on Creating Persuasive Elevator Speeches. It is not just the typical instruction about “elevator pitches” that takes only 5 minutes to describe. See the full class outline below for topics I cover. I offer the class to both individuals and groups.

Creating Persuasive Elevator Speeches is a more in-depth guide on what to do and how to customize that kind of introduction for other occasions, such as when you are seated next to a stranger at a dinner party or when you are riding the Metro/subway. Sometimes, you have only a moment in which to get your message across. At other times, you are “a captive audience,” seated next to someone at an event or a meeting, and there is considerable time for mentioning key points you want to make.

You would use “elevator speeches” or “pitches” when you are trying to explain a business, a project, a fundraiser, or some other cause for which you hope to generate interest, when you are talking to a stranger in a limited amount of time. Here are some details.

What ARE “Elevator Speeches?” (Wikipedia)

An elevator pitchelevator speech or elevator statement is a short summary used to quickly and simply define a process, product, service, organization, or event and its value proposition.[1]….A value proposition is a promise of value to be delivered and acknowledged. It is also a belief from the customer how value (benefit) will be delivered and experienced. A value proposition can apply to an entire organization, or parts thereof, or customer accounts, or products or services.
